We’re here again! Summer is the time for lots of fun BBQs and social gatherings filled with tempting foods and beverages – some of which are better for you than others. Here are a few tips to help you make the best decisions you can under these tempting situations… and when there is something too good to pass up, perhaps indulge a little!

Think Paleo

Load your plate up with fresh summer veggies (salad, grilled veggies, guacamole) and quality proteins – chicken, steak, fish. Try to avoid the potato salads, chips, pastas, cookies, and burger buns – you have the perfect Paleo plate.

Mindful Drinking

Make a deal with yourself BEFORE the party starts about how many alcoholic beverages you’ll drink and stick to it. More tips for mindful drinking:

  • Eat something before you drink
  • Only have one drink per hour
  • Hydrate with a seltzer in between drinks
  • Stick to sugar-free mixers like seltzer

Then go ahead – savor that delicious glass of rose!

Pack Your Tupperware

Everyone wins when you bring a delicious and healthy side dish to the BBQ. Offer in advance, so your host knows what’s coming and pack up the veggies from your farmers market visit. A dip with crudite (don’t know what to get… cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, bell peppers, asparagus, green beans, radicchio, purple carrots, snap peas, radishes, fennel, etc.) or a big summer salad is the perfect addition. Then you can pile your plate up with veggies (often missing from the average BBQ!) and the host is happy to have one less dish to prepare.
